Washington LIHEAP Gets $7.6 MillionOn January 12, Governor Christine Gregoire signed a bill which allocates $7.6 million in emergency aid to low-income families. The first bill of the legislative session, HB 2370, passed through the House and Senate with unanimous support. The action was prompted by unusually high energy bills this winter that have strapped low-income families. About 14,000 income-eligible families will receive an average of $350 towards their heating bills this winter. Families can apply at community agencies for heating assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Any remaining dollars will be used for weatherization. The money comes from a fine paid in April by Qwest Communications to the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission. The Governor has proposed another measure, a $4.5 million increase in funds to improve the energy efficiency of homes occupied by low-income families and will also work with utilities on a program for educating low-income families on insulation and conservation.
