LIHEAP Applications Up; States Running Out of Funds

A survey by the National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association (NEADA) last month showed that the number of LIHEAP applications is up nationwide by 10.8 percent over last year. Applications are expected to reach at least 5.6 million this year, the highest level in the last 12 years, NEADA said in a press release.

Additionally, NEADA’s survey found that 12 states are projecting application increases of at least 25 percent: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Kansas, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. Furthermore, as a result of rising applications, states are beginning to run out of program funds. South Dakota estimated it would run out Christmas week and eight other states said they would be out by the end of January.

For the latest on LIHEAP appropriations, see NEADA’s website.
