LA Provides $10 Million for Low-Income Energy Programs

On August 25, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell announced that $10 million in state funds will be available to supplement LIHEAP and the Weatherization Assistance Program.

The $10 million will be split evenly between the two programs. Eligible households will receive an average payment of $426 for energy assistance, and about 11,000 will be served. With $5 million going for weatherization of homes, an estimated 1,700 will receive help.

Households with incomes at or less than 60 percent of state median income – $36,097 for a family of four – are eligible. Priority is given to families with children five years old and younger, or with elderly or disabled members. Households can apply at community action agencies, which also administer LIHEAP.

The $10 million comes from the Petroleum Violation Escrow funds, also known as oil overcharge funds, paid by oil companies to the government decades ago to settle violations of price regulations.
