TN Adds $5 Million to LIHEAP

On December 7, Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen launched Operation Warm Homes TN to provide additional funds for heating assistance for low-income, elderly and disabled households. Noting that heating bills are projected to increase by 50 percent over last year, the Governor announced a one-time state allocation of $5 million to supplement LIHEAP. The additional funds will provide assistance to households on a waiting list. Last year, LIHEAP assisted over 71,000 households, including nearly 30,000 senior citizen applicants.

In addition, the Governor called on churches and other faith-based organizations to contribute $100 per congregation to a charitable fund that will be administered by the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The faith-based community is committed to support the effort through its 3,000 congregations in Tennessee.
